Short Narrowboat Hire Breaks
3 Day Willington Cruise
Day 1. Meet at The New Inn, Shardlow and board the narrowboat. You will be given a comprehensive handover which lasts approximately one hour. When you are confident with handling the boat you will set sail with your trainer who will take you through the first lock (Shardlow Lock No.2). It's worthwhile mooring up and crossing back over the canal for a quick stop to the Shardlow Heritage Centre, for a fascinating insight into this 18th Centrury Inland Port.
Set sail again and you will soon be at the next lock at Aston on Trent, If you set off late in the day you could stop here for the night. Its a short walk into the Village to a pub or carry onto the next Lock at Weston and go to the Coopers Arms for a delicious carvery.
Rise and Shine! Cook breakfast on the boat or carry on upstream towards Stenson for a late breakfast at the canal side tearooms. If you want somewhere to stop for lunch the Ragley Boat Stop just after Stenson does cheap and cheerful pub lunches with a canalside mooring.
By early afternoon you should arrive in Willington, Look out for the sanitary station on the right. It is just before the Winding Hole (turning basin) that you need to use to turn the narrowboat back around! Use the sanitary station to empty the Chemical loo, fill up with water and dispose of your rubbish.
Willington has 3 pubs, an Indian, Chip Shop and a local shop and there is also a bar and tearoom at Mercia Marina - a short walk away. or take a walk to Betty's Farmshop for lots of homemade tasty treats.
Time to head back. Don't forget it takes about four and a half hours, so leave yourself plenty of time particularly if you want to stop off somewhere on the way back.
